Umpire Expectations at Nelson Netball Centre

  • Report to the Office: Arrive and sign in at the Nelson Netball Centre office at least 10 minutes before the start of your assigned round.
  • Reserve Umpire/Duty: Arrive and sign in as above. You must wait in clear sight of office and not leave until staff have confirmed you are not required in any capacity.
  • Footwear: Ensure you are wearing appropriate sports shoes suitable for safe movement on court surfaces (no Birkenstocks, Crocs, Jandals, etc).
  • Equipment: Bring a working whistle. Whistles are available at the office - cash only.
  • Professional Conduct: Display fair, consistent, and confident officiating at all times.
  • ​​​​​​​Communication: Maintain respectful communication with players, coaches, and fellow umpires.
  • Punctuality: Be ready and positioned courtside before the match begins.
  • Game Management: Apply rules consistently and ensure player safety and enjoyment of the game.
  • ​​​​​​​Handling Conflict: If a conflict or issue arises during a game that you cannot resolve, send someone to the office to seek assistance. Court/duty support will be sent to help.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

ANNUAL UMPIRE REGISTRATION

At Nelson Netball, we’re proud to support and develop umpires at every level - from beginners taking the court for the first time to experienced officials aiming for higher qualifications. Our umpiring programme provides training, mentoring, and ongoing opportunities to build skills, confidence, and a deep understanding of the game.

Whether you’re looking to start your umpiring journey or take the next step in your officiating career, Nelson Netball offers pathways and support for all levels. Please see ‘Umpire Pathway + Structure’ for further information about the pathway and gaining qualifications. 

Every season brings different time commitments and availability. Please complete the registration below to join us as an umpire for this season. This form is for all 7-aside umpires - Youth (blue shirts), Development (black shirts) and Pathway Umpires (white shirts and adults).

ANNUAL FutureFERN UMPIRE REGISTRATION

The first step in our program is umpiring the 6-aside game played by our Year 5/6 players. These umpires are called FutureFERN umpires and wear pink shirts. They umpire at 9am and 10:15am every Saturday during the winter season with training being offered beforehand and mentoring provided courtside.

Online Module

NNZ has a Learning to Umpire Module for New Umpires and Player Umpires which replaces the NNZ Centre Theory test. This module is the first step towards the Centre Umpire Award or a pre-requisitie for  NNC's Premier, Senior and College 1-3 teams' Player Umpires. The module helps New and Player Umpires understand some of the rules of netball as well as some practical techniques to enhance their umpiring. Player Umpires will need to send a copy of their certificate to their clubs secretary​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
